Allergan plc is an Irish-domiciled pharmaceutical company that acquires, develops, manufactures, and markets brand name drugs and medical devices in the areas of medical aesthetics, eye care, central nervous system, and gastroenterology. The company is the maker of Botox.
Allergan plc was formed in March 2015 when Irish–registered Actavis plc acquired the U.S.–registered Allergan, Inc., and assumed the Allergan name. In 2016, Allergan sold its generic business, Actavis, to Teva for $40.5 billion. In June 2019, U.S. pharmaceutical company AbbVie announced it had reached an agreement to acquire Allergan for $63 billion. The merged company would be domiciled in the U.S. for tax purposes.
According to The United States Department of Justice American pharmaceutical manufacturer Allergan Inc. agreed to plead guilty and pay $600 million to resolve its criminal and civil liability arising from the company’s unlawful promotion of its biological product, Botox® Therapeutic, for uses not approved as safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Justice Department announced back in September 2010. The resolution included a criminal fine and forfeiture totaling $375 million and a civil settlement with the federal government and the states of $225 million.
